Kilmarnock Art Club's roots reach back 130 years to 1889 and the Kilmarnock Fine Art Institute. John Watson, who helped establish the club, was the great grandfather of one of our present members. So, the present day club has direct links to the first days of the club in Kilmarnock! You can see paintings by John Watson in the Kilmarnock collection at the Dick Institute. In 1963 the Kilmarnock Fine Art Institute was wound up and Kilmarnock Art Club was formed. All assets were transferred to the newly formed Kilmarnock Art Club.
The club has approximately 60 members and meets on a Monday night. We have a portrait section and demonstrations by professional artists every month. Previous demonstrators include Ronnie Russell, Helen Turner, Charles Kelly and Michael Mullen. The club has had successful exhibitions in the Dick Institute, McLaurin Gallery, Irvine Museum, New Laigh Kirk and Ayr and Crosshouse Hospitals. The latter two have been the venues for our annual exhibitions and for which we are extremely grateful.
Individual members have exhibited in several exhibitions with considerable success in the McLaurin gallery, and Lochgreen Hotel (Hansel Village), Paisley Institute, Macclesfield and as far flung as St. Petersburg, Russia.
We are always looking for new members of any age (under 18s welcome). So, if you have painted before, or if you have never painted since schooldays and would like to 'give it a go' again, please get in touch as you will be made most welcome.
It's a wonderful hobby that can take over your life!!!
